Embracing the Unexpected: My Journey to Jordan
By Renee Perches
As a woman who relishes venturing into the great outdoors and delving into diverse cultures, my first international trip was a dream waiting to unfold.
In a world filled with infinite destinations to explore, my heart was set on a voyage of self-discovery and cultural immersion. Contrary to the conventional wanderlust-inspiring destinations, the Middle East was not the first choice that popped into my mind. However, Jordan, with its captivating blend of history, hospitality, and unparalleled landscapes, proved to be the perfect steppingstone for an open-minded adventurer like myself.
As I eagerly prepared for my journey, I invested four months in multiple, daily Duolingo sessions, hoping to respectfully communicate the basics with the local Jordanians. Yet, to my surprise, the language barrier was less daunting than anticipated. English, intertwined seamlessly with Arabic, both spoken and in the local signage. This seamless coexistence of languages brought an unexpected sense of comfort, dissolving any communication apprehensions I had held. It served as a reminder that beyond language barriers, humanity finds a way to connect and share stories that transcend words.
One cannot truly immerse themselves in a culture without indulging in its cuisine. The culinary journey I embarked upon in Jordan was a delight to my senses. From aromatic spices of traditional dishes to the warmth of Bedouin hospitality, every meal was a celebration of flavor and tradition.
As I laid in bed, early and hardly awake, the singing of the morning call to prayer echoed through the streets. This melodic reminder of faith, so deeply ingrained in the culture, created a symphony of unity that resonated with me. I reflected on the true essence of Jordan that shone within its people. The genuine smiles and welcoming gestures of locals, and each interaction was a testament to the generosity that knows no borders when a traditional home meal is shared turning strangers into friends.
While Petra and the Dead Sea are undeniably iconic, Jordan offers a tapestry of hidden gems that deserve equal attention. Forty minutes outside of Amman, a Roman city frozen in time, Jerash, transported me back through history. Its grand arches and intricate mosaics told stories of a bygone era, while the lively streets breathed life into its ancient walls.
The vast expanse of Wadi Rum, with its crimson sands and towering rock formations, felt like another planet altogether (it is where the movie The Martian was filmed). If you admire astronomy, I highly recommend the trek out into the desert just for star gazing. Sitting in the soft desert sand the silence of the landscape spoke volumes, offering a chance to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with the natural rhythm of existence.
Traveling isn't just about seeing new places; it's about leaving a positive impact on the communities we visit. In Jordan, I wanted to make my journey matter by supporting initiatives that empower local communities. The Iraq Al Amir Women’s Cooperative is a shining example of the power of sustainable tourism. By engaging in workshops and purchasing handmade crafts, I contributed to the economic growth of the community and witnessed firsthand the ripple effect of guest’s actions.
My journey to Jordan was more than a travel adventure; it was a revelation of the human spirit's boundless capacity for connection, understanding, and growth. I often find solace in solo exploration; I rejected preconceived notions and embraced the unfamiliar with an open heart. Jordan's landscapes, history, and people wove together a story that left an imprint on my soul.
To anyone considering their first international trip or venturing into the unknown, I encourage you to look beyond the expected. Embrace the unfamiliar, for it is in those moments of discomfort that we truly discover ourselves and our place in this diverse world. As my journey unfolded, I realized that wanderlust knows no boundaries; it is a flame that burns brightly within us, waiting to be kindled by the unexpected and the extraordinary.
