Feeding Children in Africa
By Sara Verk
The numbers are staggering. One billion children worldwide are living in poverty. There are 226.7 million people starving in Africa.
The countries most affected by extreme poverty and hunger in Africa are mainly those located south of the Sahara. One in four people suffers from hunger there. Children are particularly affected by the hunger crisis in Africa. There are far too many starving children in Africa, every single affected child is one too many. Extreme weather, drought and economic woes are some of the factors adding to the food shortage, making it even more difficult for families to feed their children. Displaced families have been unable to farm or feed their livestock and food prices have risen significantly.
There are communities in Africa that are working toward change, but they need so much help to do their sustainable, life-changing work to provide healthy, nutritious meals. In impoverished and food-insecure communities, nutrition programs alleviate the enormous burden on parents to provide for their children, allowing for more fair distribution of scarce household resources and reducing hunger among the most vulnerable.
